CRENSHAW COUGARS
BACK 2 BACK CHAMPS
TWICE IS SO NICE
It was Saturday Dec 11, 2011, Los Angeles Coliseum 100 pm, forecast clear and sunny. Scheduled to be, a great afternoon for football. Defending champion Crenshaw Cougars , coached by Robert Garrett versus the Carson Colts and new head coach Elijah Asante. The standouts, De Anthony Thomas and Marquis Thompson, Marcus Martin(USC) and transfer Shaquille Shelton for Crenshaw, Justin Alo, Deon Willis and Myles Johnson for the Colts.
One of the most heated rivalries in the city going back to at least 1998 when the Cougars lost to the Colts at Fremont High. In a semi final game, on a water soaked field, although there had been no rain in the forecast for weeks.
After losing the State championship and the two opening games of the season Crenshaw stepped up on defense and offense and went on to terrorize the remainder of their opponents, ending the season 10-2.
Carson started of their season with a very impressive win over Santa Ana Mater Dei and just about everyone started looking for them to be the next city champion. Losing only two games, Carson headed into the playoffs with a record to match that of the Cougars.
Both teams would blow through their opposition in the post season setting up a most anticipated match-up between the defending champ and what was considered to be the best team in the city this year. The Cougars paid no attention to any of the hype concerning the Colts. They simply focused on returning to the Coliseum one game at a time. With two losses they already knew that they probably would not receive another bid for a state championship game.
In short, this game would be all Crenshaw. Similar to this story, the hype would be much more suspenseful than the actual game. From the onset the Cougars took control of the game and never looked back. De Anthony Thomas and Shaquille Shelton combined for 4 touchdowns, and Crenshaws defense made life for all city first team quarterback Justin Alo miserable. Carson was completely out matched and was unable to match the intensity of Crenshaw. At the games end, the Cougars would once again be crowned the “DivI CITY SECTION CHAMPION”.
